4.3. Telnet

This chapter describes supported methods for connecting to a SpinServer.

4.1. Secure Shell

Secure shell (SSH) is a program used to log in to another machine by using an encrypted connection that provides secure communications over insecure channels. It is recommended for secure connections to a SpinServer system.

Note: Connect to the SpinServer by using the IP address or Domain Name System (DNS) name of the management port, not a data or cluster port.

You can obtain secure shell from a number of sources, including the following:

4.1.1. UNIX Systems

To use SSH from a UNIX system, perform the following steps:

  1. Enter ssh admin@spinserver. At the prompt, enter the root password to run a remote shell.

  2. When prompted for the admin password, enter the administrator password. This is initially set to admin.

4.1.2. Windows Systems

To use SSH from a Windows system, perform the following steps:

  1. Start an SSH client.

  2. Connect to the SpinServer by using the IP address or DNS name of the management port.

  3. Log in as admin.

  4. When prompted for the admin password, enter the administrator password. This is initially set to admin.

4.2. HTTPS

To connect to a SpinServer by HTTPS, in the address field of a browser, type https://server, where server is the ID of the SpinServer you want to manage (for instance, fileserver1.engineeringlab, Server1, or 10.2.2.237).

See Section 6.3 for information on setting up secure HTTPS on a SpinServer.

4.3. Telnet

Telnet access can be enabled by running the chkconfig telnet on command after logging in as root to a SpinServer.

Note: Connecting to the SpinServer via Telnet is not a secure connection.
